Over the past few months Airbnb has conducted a few studies examining the impact of their global operations on local economies. The most recent study looked at Berlin, which is most certainly a recipient of economic benefits due to Airbnb’s presence as visitors are attracted to neighbourhoods not conventionally frequented by tourists. Also, once there, these visitors stay for longer and spend more money than their hotel patron counterparts.
Those staying with an Airbnb host in Berlin are contributing more directly to the local economy than if they choose a large hotel chain. This is by contributing to the household budget of locals, and spending in local stores and restaurants.
The previous studies looked at San Francisco, Amsterdam and Paris, with findings revealing that many participants who were sharing their place of residence were using the money to pay for expenses such as their mortgage.
